Sony Lim

Sony Lim is fascinated by getting to the bottom of things and discovering the abstract in nature. 1990 Lim was born in the agricultural town of Shanwei, but soon moved to Guangzhou, the famous port metropolis historically known as Canton. He was fortunate enough to be on the pulse, seeing as he studied in an international atmosphere at the Academy of Fine Arts, which focused on postmodern art. Lim specialised in formal oil paintings and then found in the implementation of natural motifs his own style between tradition and innovation.

Sony Lim: The world is a sketchbook.

How do you know what exactly makes a painting interesting?

I could learn the analytical look for what would later become my motif at my academy and the whole city is full of inspiration. The neon billboards, but also the textures of the historical parts of the city are endless food for my ideas. Friends are already teasing me because I would never leave my flat without a sketchbook.

So why are there also nature motifs to see on your paintings?

It comes from me still being tied to the greenery and mountainous landscape of my old homeland and enjoy going into nature on the weekends to relax. Finding a balance between the two worlds is important. I also meet up often with my cousin Rick, who studies in the north, in Tianjin, at the art school.

Where do you see perspectives in the future?

I am thinking of travelling abroad with a scholarship from my university. European art has always been especially interesting to me and it is my great wish to experience it firsthand.
