Kylie Duangan

The filigree and the ornamentation have done it to Kylie Duangan. In discreet pastel shades she creates works of art that are intended for decoration. The artist, who was born in Shenzen, the "city of design", already gained a sense for interior design and aesthetics during her training as an interior architect at the academy there, before she found her style and can now devote herself entirely to painting.

Kylie Duangan: Beauty in all its forms fascinates me.

How do you get inspired?

I'm fascinated by beautiful things and I'm a visual type, so I like to look at what other people use to decorate themselves and their surroundings. An ornamental border on an old Chinese temple can be as much an inspiration as the flower tendril of the plant that winds around it. Beautifying the things you surround yourself with seems to have been anchored in people for a long time and is a cornerstone of our culture. How taste changes over time is another area of interest.

What are you working on right now?

My current project is a study of ancient Chinese blacksmithing. So I travel a lot in gardens and museums and look at the works of craftsmen from ancient times. In China, roof decorations and wrought-iron gates have almost calligraphic elements, which I take a close look at and hold on to the block. The sketches I make of the details are then later transformed into paintings in the studio.

Which KunstLoft painting is your favorite?

From this series I like "Hidden Treasure" best, because it has two parts! No, fun. It's a gate, and I like the idea of someone looking at it in a living room and wondering what's behind it.
