The japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) began a woodblock printing apprenticeship at the age of fifteen. He spent almost the entirety of his long life creating colour woodblock prints and used around thirty different pseudonyms. By far his most famous work is 'The Great Wave off the Coast of Kanagawa' from the picture series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji'. His style inspired artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Gustav Klimt and contributed to Japonism.
