Jayden Chang

Jayden Chang convinces with his realistic modern object art with expressive colour surfaces. The sculptor experienced an early artistic and cultural imprint through his historical birthplace Wuxi. As a trained stonemason, Chang learns about various materials and experiments with how to shape them. With the desire to be able to create art independently, he finally opened his own small studio. The contrast between lacquered round surfaces and haptic metal effects creates the special tension of his small-format sculptures. The warm, bright colours perfectly complement the boldness of the structurally strong details in metallic brilliance and ensure a successful overall concept.

Jayden Chang: The material and texture of a work are just as important as colour and form.

What makes a sculpture special?

Above all, a sculptural work allows the artist to go beyond the boundaries of two-dimensionality. From time to time I also take the brush in my hand and dedicate myself to the canvas, but this is usually only to capture fleeting ideas for my next sculpture. I love the feel of the material. Some fabrics are easier to work with, others are difficult to control. So, in addition to the form you have in your head, there is always a bit of arbitrariness. That's what makes it so exciting, because nobody knows exactly what the result will look like in the end.

Why did you become an artist?

My hometown has so much to offer artistically. You can see that in houses and other buildings. And then of course at our temples and statues. Especially these have always impressed me. That's why I was very happy to learn the same profession as a father. After all, you also have to deal with the processing and shaping of material. But after a few years I wanted more artistic freedom and became an artist. My father is not angry with me, because my cousin likes to take over the family business.

Which KunstLoft sculpture is your favorite?

It's not my personal style, but I like the abstract work of Logan Teng. He has a good feeling for shapes. Although they don't depict anything real, they flatter the eye.
