Jacob Qiang

In the outskirts of the central Chinese city of Wuhan, the flowing sculptures are created by Jacob Qiangs. His appearance matches his works of art: the sculptures are stylish, simple and timeless, polished to a high gloss. Jacob Qiang has learned his craft from scratch: he started as an assistant in a sculpture workshop, later he studied design and since 15 years he lives and works in his own studio in Wuhan. Jacob loves art and the play with forms, in his eyes some of the childlike joy with which he has worked on the material still shines.

Jacob Qiang: Art is the love of my life, my family and my home.

Why did you become an artist?

I can do it. I love it. Always have. So I made it the center of my existence.

If you weren't an artist, what would you have become?

In any case, I would have done something manual, because for me it is important to see what I spend my time with. At the end of a day I have to be able to touch and see what I have done, otherwise the day is lost for me.

How do you get inspired?

I am fascinated by sounds and try to reproduce them. The way that an autumn leaf rustles down or scissors raindrops knock the Morse signs on the roofs. These are things I like to capture.
