What makes a painting something special?

„I am crazy about forms. I love how one can create those suspenseful tensions with simple geometric shapes. As soon as one displays the colours less bold they then seem different. One has to play with them. To me colours are a second rate means of presentation, shapes are the kings.”

If you were not an artist, what would you be?

„Through my passion for shapes and a certain straightforwardness I first wanted to be an architect, and that is also what I studied. When designing a building one has to adhere to strict rules and that influenced me a lot. That is not art, it is work and the work an architect does is not how many believe it is. One does not think of their dream house and then build it. Reality is, that it is much more less spectacular. The place I worked at was mostly commissioned to build terrace houses. However, I wanted more creative freedom and so took up painting. ”

Which KunstLoft painting is your favourite?

„My greatest painting so far is probably ‘At a Glance’. It is a fairly new work of art and has everything I value in a painting: form, geometry, tension. That is Finn Kao in his purest form.”
