The artist Dong Li is strongly influenced by his environment in his creative work. As the son of a tinsmith, he already had close contact with metals and their processing in his early childhood. Despite his path into the world of artists, Li never abandoned his passion for technology and lets this topic flow into his 3D metal paintings. If, on the other hand, he needs a break from the worldly, he creates abstract motifs.

What makes a metal picture special?
„Anyone can do a little hammering and grinding. The art of working with metals lies in creating filigree details and accentuating them with colours and the addition of other, perhaps even different coloured, metals.”
What are you currently working on?
„At the moment I am experimenting with multi-part metal paintings. I'm not quite sure yet whether the concept of paintings consisting of several parts can be transferred to my work without further ado. But I like to try out new things and let myself be surprised by the result.”
How do you get inspired?
„Metal paintings are almost as long as hand-painted paintings. But in the art of painting there has been much more progress and innovation over the centuries. That's what I orientate myself on. All elements that painters incorporate into the creation of a painting can also be used - sometimes in slightly modified form - for metal paintings.”
