David Feng

The artist David Feng prefers to paint modern and contemporary. Through the play of colours with earthy tones, his acrylic paintings appear exciting and at the same time calming and warm. He likes to play with geometric elements. His favourite theme is rhombus as a geometric form, which is expressed in its strength by the intense and pure colour surfaces. From pastel colours to silver shine: Feng has just the thing for connoisseurs.

David Feng: Painting a painting is like building a house. Only more beautiful.

What are you working on currently?

I'm currently working with some other artists on a concept for an art city. It's supposed to be a construction of walls and slabs, representing the highest buildings in Shanghai. Afterwards, each of the participants will paint one of his paintings in large format on one of the walls. This is a really exciting project and finally an opportunity for me to combine architecture and painting. Working with many artists is also very enriching, especially since I am still a beginner, so to speak. I learn a lot in the process.

What makes a painting special?

It may be due to my work as an architect, but I attach great importance to order. Clear leadership and precise construction are inherent in a very special aesthetic, which I personally find very appealing. Especially non-figurative paintings are often painted much too understandable without lines or the like. Just because you don't have a concrete motif doesn't mean, in my opinion, that everything has to seem wild and confusing in order to be artistic.

Why did you become an artist?

Why not? Why not? To be honest, I am not yet a full-time artist. Because I am financially secure as an architect, I could try it out without hesitation. I like to create things. Both areas have that in common, except that I feel even freer when painting. Of course, I like being an architect very much, but if I could only live on art, I would.
