Charles Meng

Charles Meng creates nonfigurative pictures with passion. His favourite motifs are round, circular shapes and long lines. Born in Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi Province, he found his way to art very early. However, he was never impressed by concrete pictures, but always enjoyed the variety of possibilities hidden in the abstract. During his studies in his hometown, this often led to heated discussions with professors, but ultimately he was able to assert himself. In the meantime he has established himself as an artist and resolutely pursues his own style. His colouring is harmonious and soft. It harmonizes with the filigree lines and the oval shapes. Charles Meng's abstract way of painting gives his assessors plenty of room to interpret and dream.

Charles Meng: Real art always allows for more than one interpretation.

How do you get inspired?

Music is a great source of inspiration for me, I also have a very broad taste in music. I like the countless possibilities, I try to achieve this with my pictures, to give the viewer a sea of possible truths, from which he then chooses his own. When painting myself, however, I rarely listen to music, so I need the peace and quiet to simply follow my thoughts.

What makes a painting special?

I think the most important thing is the color composition. In painting colours are a very powerful tool and only the exact composition leads to the ideal result. Even very slight nuances can make a big difference. Sometimes it seems as if each color has its own personality, and through the combination of several dialogues, which are always new on a picture. Who is able to use colors, can create very beautiful pictures.

Why did you become an artist?

To broaden my horizons. I could have continued to paint only for myself and would certainly have been happy if I had had another profession at the same time. But I wanted to find out - and that would bring us back to diversity - what art is all about, and that was probably the main reason for my studies. Other people's points of view, on exactly the same facts, can differ so unbelievably strongly that at some point I really didn't want to do anything other than create art and enable people to get more out of this fascinating discussion.
