Alex Kar-Wei

Trendy and modern are the pictures of Alex Kar-Wei and strongly influenced by western pop culture. The 42-year-old grew up in a small village in the Chinese province of Qinghai, but left his parental home at the age of sixteen to go to the capital Xining. He got by with small jobs, but it was clear to Alex that he would find happiness in the city, not in the country. And what there is in the big city in all its diversity, he depicts in his paintings: People. He depicts them realistically and adds imaginative or abstract details to his portraits and bodies. Thus he raises his art above pure portrait painting - it becomes a statement about our time and its people.

Alex Kar-Wei: Big city is life and life is art.

What makes a work of art into something special?

The combination of artist and motif. In a picture two things merge to one, and only in this way art is created. This is how it is in every performing art form. My paintings show people - but the way I see them. I try to depict on canvas what I feel when I see these people. Passion, joy, desire - what connects me with this person.

Which KunstLoft painting is your favorite?

As you know, I love portraits, because man is a wonderful work of art in itself. I especially like "A bond for life". The picture tells so much about the people, their love for each other. And the use of colours is simply great!

What are you working on at the moment?

I am currently working very intensively on the history of portraits - starting with traditional Chinese representations, through the European Middle Ages to self-portraits of great masters such as van Gogh. Perhaps I will succeed in uniting these currents and creating a portrait of art history.
