Adrian Maret

Adrian Maret captures the Mediterranean evening light. Raised on the French coast and shaped by work under festival lighting, he focuses on moments between day and night: harbours at dusk, quiet tree-lined park avenues, and glowing autumn tones. His oil and acrylic on canvas thrives on a striking impasto surface, visible palette-knife marks, and fine glazes that make water reflections and lantern light shimmer. Clear horizon lines and luminous blue–orange contrasts create depth and movement.

Adrian Maret: As dusk falls, light shapes color.

What distinguishes you as an artist?

As a lighting technician at summer festivals, I learned how precisely placed light can transform a space. This experience shapes my painting: cool underpainting, swift palette-knife strokes, and finally, translucent highlights. I seek the quiet dramaturgy of in-between moments — when day slips into night and water, stone, and leaves reflect light in different ways.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Through my journeys between Antibes, Nice, and Lyon — harbors, park avenues, autumn forests — I capture light conditions on site and later compose them in the studio into color harmonies. The sea gives me the calm of the horizon line; the city offers the sparks of lantern light.

What makes a painting truly unique?

The trace. Every movement of the knife is unrepeatable. A small edge determines the tension of space — and the final, very thin glaze decides whether the painting breathes.

Which colors do you prefer to work with?

Ultramarine, cobalt blue, and turquoise form the cool foundation; opposed by cadmium orange and carmine. Titanium white is used sparingly – a pinpoint glow on water or leaf.

Your advice for art collectors or buyers?

Hang the painting so that side light falls across it. Then the surface works for you – differently in the morning than in the evening.
