Great questions drive the artist Summer Xia in his paintings. Born in 1979 in the mountain town of MeiZhou, he expresses his thoughts on basic philosophical questions in abstraction. The painter skilfully incorporates his studies of art history, which he obtained in Beijing and at the Tianjina Academy of Fine Arts, into his works. The artist's wit and presence of mind is evident in the recurring element of the grid and in his profound but also humorous titles.

Is painting epistemological?

„For me, these images are meditations on the basic questions that concern me. For example, I find it striking that everything in nature sooner or later breaks through the grid into which man wants to bring it. My painting then asks: Is entropy the basic principle of the earth? Does everything sink into chaos at some point? Other pictures are my homage to Klimt, whom I value very much and with whose focus on the useful and the structures in nature I can identify myself.”

Which KunstLoft painting do you like best?

„My personal favorite is "Dance of the Galaxies." This oil painting is based on a mystical profundity that captivates the viewer. When I made it, I completely switched off my thoughts and let my hand do the job. It is astonishing what an atmospheric motif was created.”

What are you working on at the moment?

„At the moment I am devoting myself to a series of works of art that are supposed to have a certain lightness. Occasionally you have to break out of the all too serious and let yourself drift. As an artist, I don't want to set myself too narrow limits in my creativity.”
