Rick Lim: Religious iconography and modern art - an exciting mixture.

How did you come up with the idea for the special look of your pictures?

The combination of the fixed symbolism of religious art with new, changing picture elements and techniques is an exciting contrast for me. Hand gestures, for example, are an unchangeable part of Buddhist imagery, and when this meets a modern background, new statements emerge. In addition I often experience new details through the exchange with other artists and masters, with which I can enrich my art and deepen my knowledge.

How is such a work of art created?

Painting is a very intensive process for me. Also in the conception and planning of my motifs I let myself be inspired by Buddhism, where the process of creation has a ritual meaning. This is the only way an artist can represent the essence of a motif in a picture. The implementation of the theme is the first priority, so I ignore everything else.

If you weren't an artist, what would you have become?

This is very difficult for me to answer, because I don't deal with "what if" questions. Probably I would deal with the teachings of Buddhism in a different way than painting.
