Han Cai

The effect of colours and contrasts on people is at the centre of Han Cai's work. He is particularly interested in modern art. Finally, he quotes the politically committed artist Wang GunagYu as one of his influences. Born in 1972, Han Cai learned his craft at the Central Art Academy in Beijing, which attaches great importance to the frontiers of calligraphy and painting. He is always looking for inspiration and finds it all over the world.

Han Cai: Coloured shadows open up unique rays of light.

Does colour theory play an important role in your works?

I am fascinated by how different colour combinations and painting techniques create a very diverse overall picture on the canvas. What this triggers in the viewer is very exciting. Only a single and only sparingly used color tone can change the overall picture of the complete painting and its message. A feeling for colours and their effects is therefore immensely important!

To what extent does this sense of colour enrich your works of art?

It makes a big difference whether an artist wipes or dabs warm or cold colours, whether he sticks to grey tones or loses his multi-colouredness, and what contrasts he incorporates. All this triggers different psychological effects, which I learned to use specifically for my artistic work during my studies. I also like the openness of abstraction, which gives the viewer freedom of interpretation.

What are you working on right now?

At the moment I am trying to add more pastel shades to my paintings. While I had a penchant for cold and warm basic colours up to now, I now want to experiment and develop myself further. Pastel colours are suitable for giving the overall picture a completely new essence.
