William Chung

William Chung is an artist who cannot make up his mind. In his abstract acrylic paintings, the palette of colors ranges from muted and blurred colors to luminous and warm tones. As the child of a cook and a nurse, he grew up in the heart of Shanghai. Until the age of 20 he sees nothing else but the microcosm of the city. His first journey beyond the city limits takes him straight to England, 9000 kilometres away, where he can study art on a scholarship. Back home, his style is already marked by a wide variety of elements. Circles, squares and straight brush lines fly through his hand-painted works and captivate the viewer. He gives free rein to his creativity, and the artist also likes to fall back on ornaments.

William Chung: No matter how far I've travelled, in the end I found myself only by painting.

What are you working on right now?

I am working on a picture in relatively muted tones. My previous works were very colourful, but now I'm stepping a bit shorter in terms of colours. Back to the roots, I'd say.

Why did you become an artist?

I can't remember the first time I had a brush in my hand. Fortunately, at the school I attended as a child, a lot of importance was attached to something like this. So, handicrafts and the fine arts. Probably I already liked painting there. When it came to finding a career, painting was a logical consequence. At least I didn't have to rack my brains like my schoolmates, who now sit in the office every eight hours a day.

Which KunstLoft painting is your favorite?

'Light from Above' by Charles Meng. Actually I prefer more abstract motives, but I have to admit that the picture is really fascinating.
