Donny Huang: The world in your pocket - Formula in art.

What do you like about formulaic representations?

I find it interesting how a motif can be distorted when it is reproduced on canvas. In history or industry there are good reasons for abstraction, because a construction manual in realistic oil paintings, for example, would be quite time-consuming. Only through variation in scale is it possible for sailors to put the world in a bag, so to speak.

That's pretty useful. Is that art?

The different stages of a painting dissolved in a grid lead at some point to a representation of what is seen only in colours. Standardization can simplify many things, but it also generalizes them. How one can and sometimes must detach oneself from reality through the systems of painting, which one perceives with one's eyes, is my theme.

If you weren't an artist, what would you have become?

That's a question I never asked myself. Even as a young boy I knew that I wanted and had to express myself to my fellow men through painting. My creative streak is so pronounced that I would atrophy internally if I could not live it out.
